"Family, friends, and alumni. As many of you may know the Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity at East Carolina University has been officially closed. Founded in 1961 here at East Carolina, we have always strived to produce the best possible gentlemen, provide safe and social activities, and to give back to our community and our philanthropies. Those who received the email from our National headquarters, were unfortunately misled. The actions of a few brothers, some of whom have moved on in life and no longer are associated with the fraternity, were included in the reasoning for our chapter's closure. These dates of allegations were traced back to 2010, before our oldest active member had even graduated high school. We as the brothers of Sigma Phi Epsilon do not post this to ask for forgiveness nor pity, but to let everyone know that we will be closing our doors, and we will be falling on the sword together, as one. We want to express that our Nationals cannot and will not ever be able to destroy the friendships and brotherhood that WE have created at East Carolina University, simply because it doesn't fit their business model. SigEp NC Kappa wishes the brothers, both graduated and still in school, the best of luck in future endeavors and to not fall apart, but come together and continue our friendship that we have accumulated over the years. This, my brothers of Sigma Phi Epsilon at East Carolina University, is the true meaning HFF."

The rumor I heard is that national was trying to 'cleanse' the house and used behavior as a means to do it. Hate to say this but its happened at other campuses as well. Nationals are willing to take a 5 year hit and close down rather than deal with a mix of students that don't work for them. It's all about the money all the time with the nationals except in the case of house composition. I honestly think its pathetic that the national and the local could not have worked together to effectively manage the probation situation. I agree with the post above that this is house business and as such should remain private.

In the years since the chapter’s closure and subsequent appeal in 2010, Sigma Phi Epsilon North Carolina Kappa has been the source of nearly annual hazing and risk management incidents. The fraternity staff and numerous volunteers, many of whom are East Carolina alumni, have provided consistent support during that time focused on SigEp's Balanced Man Program and risk management. However, the staff recently learned of more examples of hazing and risk management violations that occurred during the 2016-17 academic year. Unfortunately, as these repeated violations show, the East Carolina chapter fell dramatically short of Sig Ep's commitment to help men strengthen their character, build leadership and interpersonal skills, and learn to develop healthy, lifelong relationships that are essential to a successful and fulfilling life.

I've heard Phi Mu is going to try to buy it since they are losing their house to Kappa Sig, but I've also heard AGD is interested too. 🙈
