unhappy
by: FreshmanIs anyone else unhappy here? My roommate has already ditched me and I've spent every night in my dorm alone.

Talk to more people on your hall! Chances are a lot of them feel the same exact way that you do. You're experiencing something new and unfamiliar, and you're probably just a little homesick. I can promise you that if you don't socialize more then you will become unhappy and probably leave ECU. Also, you're going to meet so many people the first week of classes and i'm sure you will have no problem making more friends and finding plenty things to do besides sit in your dorm. It will get better, i'm sure everyone has felt like this at least once during their freshman year.

Everyone feels like this at some point while in whatever housing you live in. Your best bet is getting out of your room, walk all the halls of your housing, go outside and walk the campus and introduce yourself to people as you go. Depending on where you come from, especially from out of state, there are a lot of kids knowing no one at ECU. If you come across a group of people sitting together introduce yourself by saying, "I'm (your name). Where are all of you from? I'm from (your town). Did other people you went to high school with come here? Have you found anything fun to do yet or is it a free-for-all until classes start?" If you get a cold shoulder say, "It was cool meeting you. Maybe I'll see you around." The biggest problems roommates run into is one roommate knowing other kids from high school. You feel weird openly asking about their plans and if you can tag along. Maybe ask if you can sometime meet them. Biggest advice: DO NOT HIBERNATE IN YOUR ROOM. Familiarize yourself with campus and some areas off campus [downtown (or Uptown as they try to call it) has a couple of shops and restaurants other than bars]. Don't be afraid to ask people questions and smile as you do so. Some roommates are total opposites and are ships passing each other in the night. Look up all campus clubs you're interested in so you know when to meet. Getting fresh air (no matter how hot it is) always helps and there are more people to meet. There are a ton of helpful blogs about this.
