why so negative?

by: freshie

I'm seeing a lot of negative comments about Greenville and ECU and I'm wondering why some people don't like it there? I'm really excited to go there in the fall and I've heard a lot of people say they love it so I'm confused by all of these negative comments. Can anyone share anything good?

The academics are watered down and the city is ridden with crime.

Truth about the crime. I've had my car stereo stolen, laptop (from a library when I went to the bathroom), wallet and a friend of mine was assaulted on the way to his dorm.

Don't you mean "riddled with crime"?

It's a good school with a lot of school pride! Greenville is sketchy in some areas but upscale in other areas the downtown area is a lot of fun though!

Definitely NOT a college town, though. Hillsborough St in Raleigh and Franklin St in Chapel Hill are so SO much better. Greenville sux.

Excited to hear you'll be joining the pirate nation! Word of advice- do not take greek rank seriously. As a junior at ECU I can tell you that this website is completely inaccurate and irrelevant. Before my freshman year, I was less than excited to come to ECU. You hear a lot of put-downs and rumors about the school. Once I came here, all that was proved wrong, and no lie each year gets better. ECU is a fantastic school, anyone who goes here will agree! The campus is beautiful, the people are great, the football is the best time, and the professors and academics are great too. Everyone who goes here loves this place. Over the past 3 years, I've had 6 friends from NC State transfer to ECU. People say so much bad stuff about ECU because they think they're so much better and their school is too. Truth is, they just love their school as much as we do. ECU kids love ECU as much as UNC kids love UNC. There's bad rumors about every school, but none are better than the others- where you fit in and where you're happiest is what matters most. If I went to App State, UNCW, Chapel Hill, NC State, maybe I would've loved it there just as much as I love ECU. But what does that matter? All I know is that I'm happier than I ever could've thought here at ECU and couldn't imagine being anywhere else. To sum it up: Everyone's different- if you fit in, you fit in. If you don't fit in, you will somewhere else. Don't listen to what people say, experience things from YOUR own perspective.

I'm a rising senior at ECU and I agree with you .... somewhat. I've enjoyed being a student here (like I would have enjoyed any other school) but I'm realizing that ECU doesn't get much respect from potential employers. I've missed out on internships and other opportunities because I didn't go to a stronger academic school. Isn't that what we go to college for in the first place? I'm wishing I had worked harder in high school so I could have gotten into UNC or even NCSU.

I've experienced the same thing. When people from my hometown ask me where I go to school, ECU never gets a positive reaction. My parents warned me about going to a school that's known for partying and mediocre academics but I wanted to have fun. Now I wish I'd listened. I got into Meredith, which also has mediocre academics but for some reason gets more respect.

So happy to read your perspective..The Pirate Nation is a happy place. Such great , friendly people . One of the best laid out college campuses ever..Convenient and well maintained. Nothing but good vibes here. So happy that you shared this view. Indeed a blessing to be an East Carolina University student...No hating on any other school...But ECU is a great school and offers a lifetime of friendship and great football tailgating ! GO PIRATES !!!!

Graduated from ecu this past May and have a job paying close to 60k a year... Had pretty mediocre grades as well. So maybe you shouldn't blame ecu and start blaming yourself.

If you're doing so well with your ECU degree, why in the hell are you looking up GR posts from May? At 9:00 am on a Thursday? Must be a great, high powered job.

Yes, Awesome school !! Wonderful staff , professors and student body ! Greenville has so much to offer. Like any town it has sections that are not scenic or perhaps safe to be by yourself at night..But the ECU security is pretty cohesive and they do a lot to students and parents notified . East Carolina has so much to offer and is a great and has a very supportive community in Greenville !

For the 60k person and posts that followed, why in all hell are you making your opinion known on something OP wrote 3 months ago? If you have a different perspective about Gville, start a new post. Fresh perspective, fresh post. Must have loads of time to go through all the discussions, going back till end of May.
