First of all, go greek! While every greek system has its problems and UW is no different, there is a HUGE difference in the quality of social life between the dorms and greek row. Nearly all the parties on campus are put on by the frats, which means that dorm people actually try to sneak into frat parties!! But, more often than not, they can’t even get in because they’re not in a house. Keep that in mind when you’re trying to make that decision. For sororities, trying to get into 16 out of the 18 of the houses is a really competitive process and not super enjoyable, but once you’re in, it’s great. On the other side of things though, if you want a bid from any of the 2 others, you’ll pretty much get a bid. When you go through rush, it’s pretty obvious which houses those two are. Frats are similar, but a LOT less competitive. Problem is that once you get into a higher ranked frat, the hazing and pledging process can be kind of brutal. (With sororities though, there is NO hazing at all with the exception of 1 or 2 higher ranked houses). Almost all “top” frats have a horrible hazing process, and even down to the middle ones are still going to get hazed in some regard. Bottom houses have barely any hazing, and in my opinion, a stronger brotherhood, but they also don’t pull as many hot girls. Speaking of hot girls, the overall attractiveness of UW’s greek system would be average. A Washington 10 is a California 7, as some would say. However, we definitely still have some very attractive girls, they’re just more concentrated in our top houses. Our top top houses look like the top houses at those california schools, our upper top girls look like their middle girls, our middle girls look like their bottom houses, and finally, our bottom house girls look like they wouldn’t get a bid at any school with a more attractive greek system. However, keep in mind that there are plenty of schools where half or more of their houses wouldn’t get a bid anywhere other than that school, so in the grand scheme of things, UW does pretty well for themselves. In terms of diversity, UW may have one of the most diverse greek systems in the country, and every house (other than some frats, cough, BETA) has at least one POC. Also, the greek system here is HUGE. 130+ girls in each sorority (there’s 18 who do formal fall and 2 who only COB and don’t rly count), and 50+ guys in each frat (where there’s at least twice as many frats).
