CSUS Greeks are great! My spouse and I are Sac state Alumnus who shared the Greek experience, we both had positive memories at CSU Sacramento, but you’ll soon realize It comes with some challenges.. We supposedly live in a world advocating for inclusiveness, being fair, not judging and getting to know how people and groups work before speaking out against them, yet this isn’t a courtesy Greeks feel as a whole. Generally, Greeks are judged, quit liberally by educated bodies/ groups. Social advocacy doesn’t seem to apply when talking about Greek organizations. I run into adults all the time who didn’t have the Greek experience who take liberties to stereotype, judge, trash and assume students who choose Greek life as a way to be involved with the school, in the harshest way. These Greeks are people’s children, grandkids, your niece- people like you and I! Also interesting; I’ve never met anyone in the corporate world who were part of a fraternity or sorority that didn’t talk fondly about their experience. While Greek life is not for everyone, and not a necessary part of future success, CSUS Greek life gave us the opportunity to get involved with a group, a micro example of what we were to see/ experience in the real world- all kinds of people, different personalities, different challenges & leadership opportunities to see my own personal success and others. Contrary to what you see on TV, ( you would think people were more savvy- Animal House is a movie, not a documentary or biography) Greeks have to adhere to standards that the general student does not, unless they hold themselves to these standards. Greeks have fun ( why would you join a group that doesn’t have fun activities?) but have to move through their college experience meeting grade requirements, study hour requirements, participation requirements, philanthropy involvement with their own group and sister/ brother Greek groups, They have public standards. ( I know bunko ladies who’ve behaved worse than any sorority girl I’ve known!) If they do not meet or exceed the standards, they are held accountable. All people, whether in or out of the Greek system, have the potential for missteps. - Greek leadership experiences tremendous amount of work & feel tremendous amount of responsibility that the general public does not realize. While there are administrative, security, & gen. student missteps, the public/school does not realize the pressure to be infallible Greek leaders feel and it comes easy to blanket the whole system, stereotypically. If you ask me, It would be much easier sometimes to take care of oneself and deal with making grades, paying bills, feeding themselves and acting however they want in public with no consequences for four years. Greek life has given my husband and I lifelong friendships, business connections and professional mentors, a sense of community and the opportunity to hone in on our own leadership abilities and skills that we never knew existed. If you think you’d like to go Greek, get informed! Greek life is great, it offers lifelong tools, opportunities to get involved, realize ones own potential and be a part of a team with the common goal of graduation. Get to know people In class who are Greek, Do your homework, inform yourself. Going Greek has a lot of positives!
