I didn't go through formal recruitment like most girls so my experience may be different and I wouldn't know about competition when being selected but from looking at other houses some stereotypes can be seen. The girls in my house have told me that they thought recruitment was a big waste of time and a very emotionally and physically stressful week. I snapped into a house and it was honestly the best decision I made. I have had so much fun not just partying but being involved on campus, doing philanthropy events, making genuine friends, intramurals and more. I highly recommend it! also for hazing, I know all houses claim to not haze but I can't speak for any house but my own, which I never experienced it.
