Comment: “Disclaimer” does not mean they are not responsible. You had an expectation that your coat would be there. You paid for the service, and they need to honour it. Sue the Sigma Chi in Small Claims Court ($95 to do it online). The problem is that they will defend by saying that they made it clear that they aren't responsible for lost or stolen articles and will show that there was a sign the said this where you checked the coat. However, this may not protect them from liability because one cannot put up a sign and then act in anyway one wants to. It's not possible to contract out of negligence. You can send them a letter, by Registered Mail, or complete a form online and demand they pay for whatever the price of the coat is. You should give them a deadline for complying and tell them if they do not meet the deadline you will commence legal proceedings against them and on top of the money for the coat you will also be seeking interest and your costs. If they don't pay you then you can sue them.
