Comment:  No, the fact that they were using a sister's death for sympathy is absolutely true. Some of the deceased's best friends in AOPi dropped upon discovering they were going to be exploiting her death to "get a hot pledge class this year" since they had to give out snap bids last fall. Aside from being appalled that they would do this, I'm genuinely kind of sad that an organization that claims to have such a strong "sisterhood" would use such a tragedy as a rush tool.
