There's no better way to do it. I'd much rather have a week to get to know someone than the 15 minutes formal recruitment gives you. Also why in the hell would you want to parade around in a face full of contouring makeup when you've got better things to do during the week. No one should have time to get up before classes and put on a full face of makeup and if they do they're probably as fake and shallow as the person judging someone for their looks.
