Referencing the comment above about house corporations and alums paying for the houses...that's just wrong. Where do you think the house corporations get their money? Yes, some alums do donate...but the VAST majority of House Corp funds come directly from fees paid to the sorority by its members. Currently, Phi Mu has announced that they are building a new house and THEIR OWN MEMBERS are saying that will cause a dues increase for their chapter members. I have no idea if this is accurate, but that is what the collegians are telling people. What is accurate is the fact that they are already the most expensive house on campus. Chi O may be planning an expansion, but because their house has been on campus so long and their chapter is so long-established, I doubt their members will see much of an increase in their dues because of the money they've got saved. Embarking on any building project is a HUGE undertaking. And, to do it right, it takes lots of money, time, and effort. We're talking MILLIONS up front (to prevent the chapter from having to pay lots of money in dues) and at least a year or two of planning before anything can actually get started.
