Several years ago we were known as the house that mostly had business majors. That's a great career and we still have some people who want to be in finance or accounting or whatever, but we made a much stronger effort to get a cross-section of majors. And when we look at someone's resume, we are looking for what we sometimes refer to their "third thing." In other words, they probably have great grades and ACTs, and perhaps leadership or elected positions in school. That's pretty typical. But then we ask "what's their third thing." That might be homecoming queen or it might be 200 volunteer hours at a hospital or it might be single-handedly starting a club volleyball team or it might be editor of their award-winning school newspaper. But we look for something that makes the person stand apart in a good way.
