I am in a top tier house and I can assure you a letter of recommendation is much more important than buying nice accessories. Plus, unless you have a rec to attach it to, no one will see your perfected resume because the rush form doesn't contain nearly as much information as a rec. We won't give someone a bid without a rec and having one beforehand is much better than our scrambling to get one at the 11th hour.
