I see a lot of bad information passed around here. First, I hope that anyone who is interested in joining a sorority isn't getting their information from here!! But, just in case, here are a few points of clarification. Total: Total is the number determined by PHA/Greek Life immediately following formal recruitment in the fall. Before formal recruitment, every chapter submits a number to PHA saying how many members it has. After formal recruitment, those numbers, plus the total number of women accepting bids for each house, are added up and divided by 15. Chapter total is then automatically reset to AVERAGE CHAPTER SIZE. So yes, there will be several chapters who exceed chapter total. There will also be several chapters who are below chapter total. That's how an "average" works. It doesn't mean that the chapters above total are inherently better, or that those below total are inherently worse.
