You missed the point, it's not about ranking, it's about effort. What matters is that the bottom tier is finally becoming something that PNM's are comfortable pledging without feeling as though they've failed recruitment somehow. SK, Sigma and Phi Mu are all setting standards for themselves and are trying to improve every year and that is awesome! None of them want to be known as a "leftover" house so they are trying to improve their chapters individually without the prospect of jumping tiers. It's about being the best THEY can be, without focusing on the other houses. On the flip side, you have houses like Zeta and KD who are content with the status quo they've set and because of that, they are not improving. They are stagnant. OP is saying that when you become complacent as the "hot girl house" of the bottom tier in Zeta's case, or being the "Nice Girl House" like KD, you aren't motivated to improve so in the process you end up doing worse.
