Seems to me that joining a sorority perhaps shouldn't be your top priority. If finances and an unstable family life are significant enough problems that you have trouble keeping your grades up or completing rush, I'm not sure sorority stuff is where you should be expending your energy. There are all kinds of ways to make good friends and all kinds of ways to get through college. Sorority life is just one of them.
