Knowing someone in a house can work against you as much as it can help. I am from out of state and breezed through rush. My last-day choices were ChiO, PiPhi and ADPi. I would have been happy in any of the three and am thrilled where I wound up, which was my first choice, I knew NO ONE when I went through rush. Not one soul. But in the dorm I heard all about people who had friends in a house and weren't asked back. I also heard about girls who were worried because they really liked a house and came face to face with someone who had been a year or two ahead of them in high school who didn't get along with their sister or who beat someone out for the last spot on the pom squad or the school musical or whatever, and they were cut. I think having great grades, leadership positions, a fun personality, plenty of recs and being reasonably attractive are far more important than knowing someone. Unless you were voted Miss Congeniality in high school, there probably were people who disliked you and who might very well work against you behind the scenes.
