I'm the same situation. I came from out-of-state knowing no one. Except I'm super confused cause I had a 4.9 and was super involved in high school and had many leadership positions. I had good conversations at many houses that I got cut from. I only got asked back to the house with the worst grades and the one I had the least connection with. I respect the system and wished it worked out for me, but it didn't. People say rec letter and knowing people doesn't really affect your chances but honestly I think times are changing cause I had neither because everyone said they weren't necessary and that I'd be fine.
