You just proved the OPs point... You don't NEED a rec to get into a house. That's just the fact. Girls don't need to freak out of they dot know someone in a particular house they're interested in. OP is saying if you don't personally know someone, don't bother trying to get them to write some forged rec letter just so you can "have a rec letter". The point is, make it a quality letter or don't send one at all. Simple as that. She never said it wouldn't help you, it will if it's a quality rec by an alum who actually knows you. The other girl said some girls don't have the time to try and sit down with 15 women and get to know them so they can write a slightly more quality letter.... Again, point is, don't go out of your way to get a rec from someone you don't even know. It's about as good as not having one at all for most houses. I got into my top house without one. I'm sure other girls can too. SO, rec letters: they can help if they're quality and by someone who really genuinely knows your character. They really won't matter much in the decision making process if the alum checks "I don't know this person" on her form or writes, "I've never met her but she seems great" If you have time, get to know these alumni and get some recs for your favorite houses. If you don't, don't stress. If you're already confident in yourself you won't need someone's letter to get you into a house.
