We depend a lot on recs, and I'm in a top tier house. These days, with everyone having a fairly high h.s. gpa and with anyone being able to join multitudinous clubs and no-cut sports teams, we rely on someone with actual knowledge of the family and person. The St. Louis private schools especially give away A's like candy, so a high GPA means nothing. ACT and SAT scores matter, too.
