Now that most high school seniors have decided on where they’ll attend I feel like it’s appropriate to bring up recruitment discussions… more specific how Panhellenic trains Pi Chi’s. My grievance is the ideology of encouraging girls to not single option pref. Let’s talk about it. What benefit does it have to a PNM to pref a chapter they know they would not be excited or even okay with being a member? We see this happen too often. Pi Chi’s tell PNM’s to not single option pref and many PNM’s heed this advice bc they respect and like their Pi Chi’s, then come bid day many girls are in total shock when they open their envelope to see a bid from a chapter they absolutely don’t want to be in. They run home on bid day and won’t even take pics to commemorate the day. And drop within a a week-month. It’s so pointless, especially when this advice does nothing in a PNMs favor. Many girls would rather just be released from recruitment than to run home to somewhere they couldn’t tolerate being a member of. Secondly, this advice is harmful bc it increases the chance that a girl who actually is willing to take a bid from both her houses on pref day, gets dropped from recruitment bc some girl who didn’t even want to be there was higher on the bid list than she was, and that’s totally unfair. Pi Chi’s should be encouraging girls to approach recruitment from the standpoint of a PNM’s individual values and not shame them or create an environment that would make them feel guilty for making choices during rush that are the best for them. Real advice to high school seniors: don’t pref a house you would never realistically ever want to join, because you very well might end up with a bid from them. Opinions on a chapter will change throughout the week, but if by preference day you don’t like a chapter, that probably won’t change and doing a test trial and accepting that bid is not going to benefit you. Imagine your parents (or yourself if you’re independent like that) paying $2-3K for your dues for you to just drop before you even get a big or initiated???
