Ummm.. Personally, I've never heard of this. It's like the "don't take the water" thing. Take the water, it's hot during recruitment. Wear a watch, be on time to each house. No one really cares. Sure, wear your Michael Kors watch if you want to, wear a cute off-brand watch. No one but DG is going to ask what your parents do for a living, so show off if you want or don't. It's your choice. Just look pretty. Chances are, 90% of us are going to be good at talking to PNMs and might not notice the watch, unless you make it a focal point. In all seriousness, a watch is not going to make or break whether or not you get into a house. It's your personality, grades, and involvement.
