If I’m being honest with you, how each person values Greek life is going to vary, and might even change over the course of being a part of it. I know some people who dreamed about being in a sorority once they came to college and loved it and I’ve met some who were super excited to join and dropped mid their first semester. I would say if you’re curious enough to explore, it won’t hurt to go through recruitment. And in general a majority of Sorority dues go toward the chapter operations (socials, philanthropy, sisterhood events, meals) and the upkeep of the chapter house, and the rest go to nationals. Initially yeah the price tag isn’t the prettiest to look at, but as long as you actually participate in most things you really are getting your money’s worth. And you’ll gain some pretty great friends too. I know it seems like a lot of pressure to go through recruitment because when you look through your classes’ Facebook group so many people express their interest in it when looking for roommates and it’s easy to feel like you’ll be missing out. But ultimately do what’s right for you. I will say though it’s better to try it and realize it’s not for you than to have the feeling of regret of not trying when you see your peers being involved. And yes there is spring recruitment, but that is significantly harder to get a bid or even an invitation to a recruitment event. Doing primary recruitment in the fall is the best chance you’ll have at joining a sorority and it at least gives you the opportunity to be considered by each chapter and a chance for you to check each one out. Wishing you a great start to your time at Mizzou no matter what you choose!
