I would agree with you if you were talking about class rank, but we are talking about GPA. If you are interested in joining a house with strict grade cuts, we expect to see a high gpa, including A's in AP or BA classes, four years of math including two of calc, 4-5 years of foreign language (including AP). AP classes are not graded on a curve. If you do the work satisfactorily you will get an A and get a 4 or 5 on the AP exam. If you don't it's because the work was too hard. If you attend a school without AP classes (and 60% of high schools do offer AP classes), that doesn't mean it's an inferior school. It's likely a small town school or one that has a philosophical problem with AP and BA classes (and there are many reasons for that). To imply that small-town schools are inferior is absolutely wrong. In fact, if often is more difficult to get an A in a small-town school that those St. Louis private schools where everyone gets and A, but not necessarily a quality education. Ask me, I know. I'm the scholarship chair of a top tier house, just sitting around lurking this afternoon with many of my sisters who are "doing research" (aka, stalking Facebook)
