The only way you get cut AFTER pref is if you didn't maximize your options. If you went to every party you were invited to, you are guaranteed to get a bid. An invitation to pref means that they are willing to extend you a bid. You might not be on their #1 list but they would be willing to take you as a quota addition if you maximized your options and didn't match. If you went to fewer parties than you got invited to, it is possible to not get a bid if you are too far down on everyone's list.
