I think the OP is forgetting a few things, such as what dues go for. A sorority house is a living unit just like a dorm. Those payments cover the room, a bed and dresser in the room, the cleaning of the bathrooms and public areas of the house, the salaries of the housemother, head cook, assistants and servers, the upkeep of the groups, the pacing of the parking lot etc. In addition, a sorority does not function in a vacuum. It is part of a national organization and as such dues also help pay for the officers, staff members and the actual building at national headquarters. Dues help pay for the colonization of news chapters so that the national organization continues to grow and thrive. It's not like a sorority is a for-profit organization, either. So if you would rather donate $3,000 a year to the charity of your choice and not be part of a sorority, go for it. But in my book you get a lot for your month, both in dues and in housing payments.
