Suiciding or as your Pi Chi will call it, "Single Option Preference" is when you have more than one house at the end of recruitment but you only sign one on your bid card. On preference night you basically rank the houses you have left in the order you'd want to join and sign the paper. This is an agreement that you'll take a bid from ANY of the houses left on the card, regardless if they're your first choice or not. Suiciding is when you only rank one house. You're allowed to do it but it's highly advised against. Everyone will try and talk you out of it. Let's say you have Alpha, Beta, and Zeta houses at the end. And you rank them in that order. The way rush works is that if you don't make the bid list for Alpha, but you do make it for Beta, you end up with a bid from Beta. If you don't make the list for Alpha or Beta, you end up as a Zeta. With suiciding, if you only rank Alpha and you don't make their bid list, you don't get a bid. It's all about maximizing your options.
