Actually it was 2003 -- Gamma Phi was the first NPC sorority at Bama to publicly extend a bid to an African-American PNM. (In 2000 they also bid a biracial PNM, but it was more under the radar because she didn't look black.) Conventional wisdom holds that this is the reason they're considered a bottom-tier house. Supposedly The Machine told them if they would bid a black woman that they would see that they had a good social schedule and would boost their rep, but they ended up going back on their promise and kept them at the bottom.
