Many of the OR houses are 99% girls from Southern states. They will say that they have out of state girls which is the truth but those girls are from GA, LA, FL, and some TX and TN. Girls from OOR (out of region) have a nearly impossible time getting a bid from OR because they don’t have a ton of connections to the Actives in the house because they didn’t attend the same high school, Bible camps, cheer camps, live in the same neighborhoods, etc. OR is all about your Southern connections. As a result, it is very difficult for a girl from the East coast, Midwest or West Coast to get into KKG, KD, XO, AXO. Those girls will get cut from those houses before the house even meets them. AGD is a little more attainable if you have a grade point average above a 4.0 and are academically strong. Really strong. DDD is more open to accepting girls from non-Southern states and a lot of OR has reacted to this by saying that they are falling in ranks as a result. If an OOR does get into an OR house, they may be treated very poorly and be excluded from activities because they lack all the connections. Southerners are not known for their inclusivity…. Some of the OR houses call these girls “filler girls” (aka the girls they extended a bid to in order to fill their pledge class). My friend was a filler at KKG and her and 4 other OOR girls dropped the house before initiation because nobody talked to them, they weren’t invited to gatherings, etc. KD is also known for treating OOR girls this way. However, the demographics of Bama are changing and a ton of OOR girls (from Chicago, NYC, NJ, MA, Southern CA, CT, PA, etc) are starting to attend Bama because of their very generous scholarships for out of state students. Those girls aren’t attracted to the Southern vibe of some of the OR houses and actually prefer NR where there are girls from all over the country…not just the South. It’s why houses like Zeta, PM and Alpha Phi started getting more and more popular on campus. The Southern OR members and their moms and grandmas can’t stand it. Also, as a result of more and more OOR girls on campus and going through recruitment, some of the other NR houses are also more and more attractive to PNMs like PiPhi, DZ, GPhi. And, Theta has had strong pledge classes the last two years in part because a lot of East Coast and Midwest girls like their vibe.
