I'm in a sorority and I paid the dues by saving money that I made working over the summer. My family isn't poor or anything, but since a sorority doesn't further my education my parents didn't find it necessary to pay for. I just don't mention it to any of my sisters and it had never been an issue. I would recommend going through rush anyway, and if you are concerned about price, then look more closely at new row houses. New row houses provide about the same experience, but at a lesser price, usually.
