This post from last year explains it. And I would explain connections and family reputation this way. Usually, if you're from Mountain Brook, Buckhead, Belle Mead, Highland Park, River Oaks, etc. and you meet someone from these areas you will start playing the name game and guess what??You will usually know people in common. And, it never fails that they know someone that went to your high school or they know someone your parents went to school with, or your sister went to camp with,or your best friend's dad, etc. And then that will lead to other similar connections and a feeling of friendship. Also, if Suzy Q lives in one of these communities or a similar one, when she decides she is going to Bama (or really any college) her parents utilize all their contacts in these communities and will find out whose daughters go to school at UA and what sororities they are in and get her picture and resume out to them. They get their friends to talk her up and get Suzy Q's name out there and get her on the radar. I'm sure this happens on a smaller scale, too. But, these would be some wealthy southern and Texas areas. And, It doesn't hurt that Suzy Q is usually blonde, beautiful, smart, rich and accomplished :)
