As someone who uses the term "Yankees" it's all in good fun. Some of the top tier fraternities won't take northerners or Midwesterners (just a couple fraternities) but all the sororities have "Yankees" even adpi. if you're cute and preppy and fun no one is going to care about where you're from! In a tiebreak, a bid or invite might go to someone from Atlanta before someone from New Jersey or ohio, but I can't think of a other situation where it would hurt you! The Yankee thing, again, is all in good fun and not meant to be offensive most of the time. Most of us southerners recognize that if you'd rather be down here for school it has to say something about you!!
