Do you think sororities wait until we meet the pnm's at the first round of recruitment to learn who they are or anything about them? Here's the truth: Every sorority at every school looks at photos on a powerpoint; BUT, if you are imagining that this process is about sorority members doing this to get our jollies out of saying mean things about pnm's then you have been watching too many bad sorority movies. Sororities have a week to meet potential new members and choose a new member class among hundreds of girls, most of whom we have never met, and it is a lot of hard, time-consuming work. We are looking for our future sisters and it is the most important thing we do every year. We study girls' photos so we will recognize them when they show up for rounds and to make sure we know who everyone is; there are so many pnm's we don't want to mix people up. We look at every resume and rec and try to match up pnm's with actives to talk to during rounds who have things in common, such as hometown or extracurriculars or other interests. Each pnm is discussed at some point; some in a quick and cursory way and others in more detail, depending on our interest level in them, with pros and cons being weighed. If an active knows something really great or really bad about a pnm, or has an amazing conversation and connects with a pnm during a round or the total opposite and finds that a pnm doesn't fit with us, she must bring it up. We are sifting through and trying to find the best for us, not wasting time being mean girls. Truth.
