A University of Georgia student accused in a weekend shooting incident during an on-campus dispute between two fraternities surrendered to authorities Monday night. Gregory John O’Brien, 21, is charged with two counts of aggravated assault and one count each of possession of a weapon on school grounds and reckless conduct. He was released about an hour after surrendering at the Clarke County Jail, after posting a $10,000 bond. UGA police said O’Brien is among members of the Tau Kappa Epsilon who early Saturday morning were involved in an altercation with members of neighboring Pi Kappa Alpha on Greek Park Circle on UGA’s North Campus. About a half-hour after the altercation, several members of Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity stood between their frat house and Tau Kappa Epsilon’s, where a similar number of that fraternity’s members were standing on the second floor landing. Police said O’Brien was on the landing when he pointed what appeared to be semiautomatic handgun toward members of Pi Kappa Alpha. He then raised the gun and fired a single shot into the air before pointing the gun back at members of Pi Kappa Alpha, at which time the fraternity members retreated into their respective houses. UGA police identified O’Brien as the alleged shooter after conducting witness and other interviews, and said they seized a .45-caliber semiautomatic pistol when searching the Tau Kappa Epsilon house.
