I don't think the old row houses still have first pick of all the best girls. Lots of girls especially rank xo & kappa towards the bottom of their lists for various reasons. Also, it's very naive to think that any awkward or unattractive girls were unwanted there; girls want to bid their friends! And yes most chapters want to be pretty but I think who you know matters even more. And don't forget parents. It would be really hard to cut the daughter or sister of someone who is very involved with the chapter, maybe even present during rush, or makes big donations etc.
