In the article.....For the third time in just over a year, a national fraternity has determined to close its chapter at Wake Forest University. Sigma Phi Epsilon’s North Carolina Zeta Chapter, which has maintained a colony status since returning to campus in 2008, was closed by its national fraternity on Jan. 29 after it denied the chapter’s charter application. Kappa Sigma and Sigma Nu fraternities were closed by their particular national fraternities last year for lack of compliance with fraternity rituals and hazing violations, respectively. “[Sigma Phi Epsilon] has been in good standing with the university and has received a significant amount of support from area alumni, as well as Wake Forest staff,” said Steve Hirst, director of student engagement. “The national organization’s decision was based on the colony’s inability to meet identified success factors.” Despite widespread speculation on campus, administration officials, Interfraternity Council leadership and the chapter’s leadership insist that there were no behavioral issues that led to this decision by the national fraternity. “This decision was not related to any behavioral concerns,” Hirst said, “and Wake Forest hopes to welcome Sigma Phi Epsilon back to campus someday.”
