Do they care? Not really but if you don't get one and no one knows you, don't be surprised to be released. There are some houses where having a rec does bump up your score. Unless you have zero interest in a particular house, get the rec. It can't hurt but there's a chance it could make the difference between getting an invite to round two or not.
