they don't do well in other areas?? what planet are you on? They are 100 yrs old & upper mid-tier house at Texas that cross rushes with lower Big 6 and AXO. In addition to being top all up and down the west and east coasts, they are great in AZ, Mizzou, KY, FL, etc. Too many mid to top-tier chapters to name. Even as new houses at Bama, LSU, etc, they are just killing it. They have a much much deeper nat'l reach than your favs like ZTA, DDD, AXO, etc. Can't speak to why the AHI Austin area alum didn't help out the Aggie chapter more, but APHI is one of the strongest in all sections of the country.
