the kid is doing the smart thing and some homework before rush. He doesn't want to be tricked into going into a fraternity that really sucks, but puts on a front for 3 days that they are the best on campus then finding out a week later the next four years of his life are going to suck. Any respectable fraternity, does not bad mouth other fraternities during rush, so the PNM's (esp. from states far as MN that don't know single person coming LSU) can at least have a small insight on what to expect. Stick to what "Try to go" said, I along with 90% of the rest of the greek community would agree with that statement.
