Here is an example of how it works. Let’s say it’s the round before preference where a PNM can be invited to and attend up to six sorority parties. Let’s imagine our PNM has a full invite list of six, and we will call the sororities A, B, C, D, E and F. The PNM can return receive invites to a maximum of three parties the next day for preference. The PNM liked A, B and C the best and those are the ones she wants to return to in a perfect world. This is how the PNM ranks them after the parties: #1 A #1 B #1 C #4 D #5 E #6 F The next day, the PNM’s invite list looks like this: B E ___ She was invited to only two preference parties. This means she wasn’t high enough on the list for A, C, D and F. So she was cut by some sororities she liked the most and liked the least. The reason we know that is if she was high enough on any of those other sororities’ invite lists, she would have had a full schedule with three parties. (On the other hand, if she’d been invited to three parties A, B and E, then we know she wasn’t high enough on C and D’s lists. We don’t know about E because her schedule filled up with her preferred sororities before the computer got to their list.)
