I went through rush freshman year and was dropped by every house except one that I really, really didn't want. Even my legacy house (which completely sucked). I went through as a sophomore and had many less cuts, and ended up in my legacy house (along with preffing the other house I loved). And I still didn't have many friends in the greek system as a sophomore, so that didn't pull extra weight for me. I think it was me just being much more confident in who I was and what I was looking for. It definitely helped to know a little bit about each house having been on campus a year---I went in with an open mind, but off the bat knew there were certain chapters that just wouldn't be for me no matter what. I knew what the parties would be like, what conversation would be like, etc. I just felt more at ease overall. I wish people would stop saying your "odds are worse" if you go in as a sophomore. It's REALLY NOT TRUE.
