I’d say the experience differs for everyone. If you have a lot of friends in houses, this can definitely help you, but nothing is ever guaranteed. I know people who had roommates/close friends in houses and didn’t get them back and there’s nothing you can do about it. I also recommend going in with an open mind, there are some houses that might surprise you that maybe weren’t on your radar. Most pnms are freshman, but if you truly put in the effort and make connections with a chapter, they are not gonna drop you just because you’re a sophomore. I love the house I’m in and going through recruitment as a sophomore was one of best decisions ever.
