It's different every year in terms of what houses do it. Basically, here's how it all works....quota is set based on how many PNMs are left in the system after Pref round. Say it's 50. Most houses make quota, some go over a couple if they can take or need more members. Sometimes some houses are short of quota....so that's when snap bidding happens. The goal is always to get everyone to reach quota and total in the winter. Sometimes though, some houses are still short. Sometimes they have too many women graduate in the spring. Or, members drop out or transfer school. If a house is under total in the fall, they may choose to (or be required to by their internationals) informal recruitment. It's usually kind of down on the DL. Personally, I think that's stupid....there shouldn't be a stigma about doing it because it does NOT mean a house is "bottom tier" or "weak"....there are many reasons why it takes place, as I explained. You can always check in with Panhel directly in the fall to see when it's happening and who is doing it. Usually it's a series of more casual open houses interested women can go to, then you'd get invited back for the last party. New member classes are always a lot smaller....like 5-10 girls. But women need to know that there is no guarantee anyone will do informal. I hope that's kind of helpful?
