you can only be an active member if you are an undergraduate member. So if you go to college as a undergrad for 4, 3 or 7 years you're an active member. Once you graduate you automatically become a alumni member. However lets say you graduate and go back for another undergraduate degree. You can become an active member but some fraternities have rules about that
