It works like this-- "Jane" has 2 houses left on pref night, she lists them in her preference order. She will try to be matched with her first house, if she is not matched ( because she's not in the first ant of numbers that are quota) and she has listed a second house, once again she will tried to be matched with her first house first( she now may match because a girl higher up preferred another house and had been high enough on both houses to receive a bid) if she is not matched this time with her top house then an attempt will be made to match her with her second house ( so this is third time attempting a match) if she matched now because enough girls from the second house list has either matched elsewhere( because they prefer another house and that house wanted them too) or because the girl was always high enough on that houses list but they were her second choice. Now if she is not matched after 3 attempts ( and remember that's when you do not suicide but list all houses you attending pref night) specific to OU a house she attended pref night will now be called and asked if they will take her as a quota addition so she matched with a house. Usually she will match with her first house as an addition but not always. This is the fourth attempt to match her. If you understand this process then you understand a top house does not have a list that begins to drop that significantly because the top houses been allowed to have that many girls even come back to their pref nights.
