If you didn’t get the house you pref’d it means they did not have you very high on their list. That’s what it means when the numbers didn’t work for you-you we’re not ranked 1-200 on the house you pref’d list. They weren’t expecting to see you on bid day and the way you felt about seeing your second choice is exactly how your first choice would have felt about seeing you. If a house broke recruitment rules (dirty rush, bid promising) they were willing to lose you-if they had been caught they would have gotten a fine and been told they had to cut you which was fine by them the whole time. It was about padding their return numbers not about wanting you as a member.
