The "top" tier have more Ole Miss history and LOTS of Ole Miss legacies. Their alums are more involved and have more influence on the decisions. They tend to be made up of a mix of Ole Miss legacies (this is a large number), some non Ole Miss legacies, and friends from Mississippi hometowns and high schools. Having more Mississippi connections and stronger alumni gives them the local advantage of claiming top tier - and the Mississippi Moms take this claim VERY seriously. Occasionally they will look at non connected PNMS - but that will make up a small percentage. Girls from these sororities will more than likely stay in Mississippi their entire lives, and need to be in these sororities because it is very relevant for their entire life. Saying this though does not mean the girls in these sororities aren't amazing. They tend to keep the highest GPAs, so they are smart. The Middle Tiers have also been here a while so they are also able to pull in larger numbers of Ole Miss legacies, they also tend to be more willing to take in non Ole Miss legacies, and will take a strong look a non connected PNMs to make up the difference. These are excellent sororities, but don't have as strong an alumni group so the alumni aren't politicking as relentlessly as the upper tier. These sororities always seem to make the Mississippi Moms nervous. The Lower tiers are going to recruit the non-connected PNMS. There are Old Miss legacies who come for these sororities, but it's mostly OOS with strong resumes but not with a Mississippi connection, non Ole Miss legacies to the upper tier sororities, and sometimes a few from the less urban Mississippi areas. The Moms like to bash this group but they're all excellent sororities - just not as "Mississippi" connected. Lower tiers don't have the strong alumni groups because members tend to move all over the place after graduation. These are going to be more diverse - probably closer to what you would see in normal sororities not so tied to the 'Southern' traditions. Most of the girls in these sororities don't care about the tiers, it wasn't an issue for them before they got here and they still don't care after. The top tier Moms like to talk about how rich the top tiers are - but honestly OOS pay much more than instate students, so there's probably more wealth in the middle and lower tiers, they just aren't obsessed with talking about it.
