Truth doesn't sound kind because it isn't. While there are exceptions every year, the top houses will let you know if they want you. We didn't even bother getting recs for houses that exhibited outward hostility towards "outsiders" the year of recruitment. We listened carefully to people we trusted who went to the school and said, screw that. I wasn't about to pay several thousands to belong to an organization that was nasty.
