Don't worry about the panhel/sorority side of it all. You can't control that. One thing that is good to note is that you never actually "drop" a sorority. Houses that you ranked low may end up on your schedule the next day as long as there is room for them. Some houses you want will release you. This opens your schedule for houses that you ranked lower. Go in knowing this, and try not to let it upset you. Your ranking is only considered in 2 circumstances - if more houses would invite you back than the max number for that round (so your lowest ones would then drop off your schedule), and after pref if both houses offer you a bid. 1st round 11 houses max, 2nd round 8 houses max, 3rd round 5 houses max, pref round 2 houses max. You rank all houses where you attend parties and don't actually "stop ranking" a house until that house has dropped off your schedule entirely.
