Through all the hysteria, there are some very valid points here. If you're left with a schedule of Phi Mu, Kappa, Pi Phi, AOPi, then yes, maybe you would have been in a top house without variable quota. If you're left with like, two houses, then no, you wouldn't have been top either way. That may sound harsh but it's true. As for legacies/connections, look. I'm in a top house here and I'm so fed up with alumnae barging in and pressuring, manipulating, blackmailing, and in many cases forcing their top picks in our classes over the girls we actually want. This year, while we've had to drop some of our favorites, we also could get rid of a lot of the girls our alumnae force on us every year. "The girl was dreaming of being in your chapter her whole life", yes, and we who are actually, you know, IN the chapter have been dreaming about our cousin, or our best friend from church being our sister. Not a random girl whose grandmother was in our house decades ago. Will I want my own daughter to be in my sorority one day? Yes, that would be nice. But more importantly I'll want her to be in a house where the girls were DYING for her to be a part of, where she can make her own friends and have her own memories. I'll already be close to my daughter, same sorority or not. Let the girls make their own decisions and stop feeling entitled for your relatives, or even worse, girls who are your friend's daughters!
