I agree with you. Coming from a guy in a selective house, if you have to plan and think about how you are going to act, look, or say, you are trying too hard. Kids rushing should already know how to act around guys who they don't know, and understand that these are the guys who hold the keys to getting into a worthy organization. Basic inherent social skills for the situation I suppose. Beyond that, it's how legitimately cool you are and there are no rules for expressing that. Don't be someone you are not. You will get douched as a pledge in a heartbeat even if you slip through the cracks. Researching core values is pointless. Every fraternity has them and learning them is what pledge term is for, unless the pledge process is a joke, which some houses at state are. I will agree with one piece of advice and that is to definitely get in contact with some rush chairs and try to hang out with some houses before rush. That will be to your advantage for 3 or 4 houses.
